The cult site ‘The Externsteine’ located in the Teutoburg Forest, in the Lippe district of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The Externsteine are identified as a sacred site of the pagan Saxons, Christians and adherents of the Asatru religion. It is the location of the Irminsul idol reportedly destroyed by Charlemagne.
The highlight of the tour is standing in the middle of the ‘high sun temple’ carved into solid rock, in which the sun enters only twice a year during the soltices.
